Here's a brief summary of what happened in the movie. I've decided to make it in a form of a photostory. I think it's easier to follow it this way. I also put all the events in order. Of course you are free to interpret it the way you want as long as it makes sense to you, but this is the meaning that I put into the story...

The first scene of the movie is a mess of random shots. It had to be a bit chaotic, as it was Gerard's dream he saw on the day of Helena's wedding. Now let's start from the beginning...

Helena and Gerard both cared deeply about each other, but they never had an opportunity to let each other know how they feel.

Ok, you don't really know anything about their relationship. But if you watch a sort of a trailer I made, which is an extended version of the first scene, the song says "I'm trying to let you know how much you mean to me..." not all lyrics fit perfectly, but it pretty much reflects the way he felt about her.
(I also *think* this is what he wrote in her yearbook at first, she just never got to read it)

you can watch it here:

They both were not so popular kids at college, so when Jack, who was considered the best-looking guy on campus, asked Helena out she just couldn't refuse...

6 months later Helena and Jack get engaged.

One day they were supposed to have a date, but Helena forgot about it and she wasn't at home when Jack came to pick her up, which revealed that she didn't **really** care about him..

well if you look at the place where she lived and the way she was dressed you'll notice she wasn't very well off and Jack had everything she always wanted, like a huge house.. (which didn't really get into the movie, but this is what that set looked like:

..a car and a good reputation.
I mean I don't think she married him just for money. I guess he was really nice to her and everything. But it was probably one of the things why she made that decision.

So Jack decides to wait in a bar across the street where he gets a bit 'carried away'.

Meanwhile, Helena comes back home with Gerard. I don't think they had a plan to meet that day, they just met accidentally, so he walked her home and Helena invites him to to her apartment. He really loved her, but as she was already engaged, he knew he had no chances with her, so he refused. But Helena thought that he didn't really like her if he behaved that way.

Maybe this part was a bit hard to understand.. just the song kinda gives you a hint as it goes 'What's the worst that I can say? Things are better if i stay' like stay where he is and it's the worst thing he could do, as later he will get killed
So she gives him a farewell hug, and this is what Jack sees walking out of the bar, he becomes furious, as he always does when he's drunk.
Together with some dudes from the bar they kidnap him, and beat him up. He slips and falls and hits his head pretty hard. He dies, but he has too strong desire to avenge his death, that's why he stays in his body and falls into coma.

Then on the day Helena and Jack get married he sees a dream [the 1st scene of the movie] all events in it were real, except for the bloody rose part, which was rather symbolic, as a rose fell into his hand when he died.
Then you see his eye open, that's his spirit waking up and getting out of his body

So after the wedding, Jack starts to see Gerard's ghost everywhere. The night when he and Helena were having a fight things get worse... he sees the writing on the mirror that says 'That hole you put me in wasn't deep enough and I'm climbing out right now' ('It's Not A Fashion Statement It's A F***ing Deathwish' lyrics) and couple of more tricks..

So Jack decides to leave the house, he runs outside and catches a taxi.. what he doesn't know is that the ghost that hates him is driving...
What happens next I'm leaving up to your interpretation, but if you listen to the song that is playing in credits, it might give you an idea :)

So later Gerard goes back to the house to say goodbye to Helena. He makes her fall asleep in the shower and see that dream... well you don't really get to see him do that, but that was the idea basically.

Then later in the bedroom he says goodbye to her, she asks him not to leave her, but he knows that now he has no choice and has to die..
[the song also should give you an idea about their conversation, as it goes 'can we pretend to leave and then we'll meet again' I made sure he would whisper into her ear during that leave part]
Helena gives him a goodbye kiss, you see lots of light and this is what brings life back to him. He gains his consciousness and wakes up in the hospital. That's why his spirit disappears, but Helena thinks that he's gone and she breaks into tears as she realizes that the dream she saw in the shower were real events and that he's dead now

Later that night she remembers about the yearbook and she wants to see what he wrote there a year ago. As he couldn't know that he would die, he probably replaced his signing with the words you see there.. 'Don't stop if I fall and don't look back. Baby bury me... and fade to black. '

He just didn't want her to suffer and told her to move on..

It all looks like a really sad ending, but actually it's a happy ending, as they will probably find each other in the end.. but I just didn't show this to you.
